Nearly 80 years after the Harlem Renaissance, McCollum is part of the next generation of transformative artists who have begun to emerge in Atlanta -- assuming the mantle of those that came before them. NEXT: The Documentary celebrates the talents, struggles, and triumphs of amazing Atlanta artists on the brink of stardom against the backdrop of a city on the verge of a renaissance. The film project grew out of the NEXT -- a quarterly concert series which showcases the brightest stars in the visual, literary, musical and film arts and a movement to galvanize Atlanta's community of artists and activists in a potent force for change. Founded in 2007 by a group of artists and activists, NEXT is unabashedly inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, a period of stunning cultural and social upheaval from 1920 to 1930 that took root in New York and then spread around the world. Nearly 80 years later, these are the "next" generation of transformative artists who have begun to emerge in Atlanta and are assuming the mantle of those that came before them.
