Feb 29, 2012: Lawmakers in Russia just passed a draconian censorship law that would impose stiff fines for anything construed as "the promotion of homosexuality" in Saint Petersburg, Russia's second largest city. Reading, writing, speaking or reporting on anything related to gay, lesbian bi or trans (LGBT) people would become a criminal act. This ban on "promotion" would also target Pride parades, literature, theater, or NGOs that openly serve LGBT people. All Out, a community of almost a million people around the world fighting for full equality, made a little video to send the Governor a message. Pass this law - We Won't Go There.

Will this be the first peaceful revolution to cut through the Kremlin's iron grip? Over the last month thousands of Russian people have protested against the lack of free elections in their so-called post-communist democracy: "If we yell loud enough, Putin will hear us." However, not all share this optimism. Boris Nemsov of the People's Freedom Party admits, "the opposition has no chance to be registered" and, with the middle classes now active in an unyielding political arena, he fears the peace will not last: "our revolutions are bloody, brown and red". Thousands protest against Russian government

Tens of thousands of people have rallied in central Moscow in the biggest popular challenge yet to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's hold on power. Protesters were demonstrating on Saturday against alleged vote rigging in a December 4 parliamentary poll. They were chanting slogans against Putin's United Russia party, with many shouting "Russia without Putin". Protests also took place in St Petersburg - Russia's second city - where thousands of people gathered, and in other cities. Al Jazeera's Neave Barker reports from Moscow, the Russian capital.

Russian oil rig sinks with 67 on board

Rescuers have saved 14 of the 67 people who were on board a floating oil rig which capsized in the Sea of Okhotsk in Russia's Far East, according to latest reports. Four more have been found dead. The Kolskoe rig was being towed by an icebreaker and a tow boat to Sakhalin Island after finishing its drill mission when the disaster happened. A distress signal was sent from it on Sunday morning.
