After Effects Tutorial: Glassy Holographic Screen

Pretty cool effect I came up with quite awhile ago and I felt like sharing it with you guys! After I recorded the tutorial I realized that for the turbulent displace, use a large size, something like 200, and then a small amount, something like 20. Other than that I thought it was a pretty cool tutorial! Peppers Ghost History: (from the Musion website) Pepper's Ghost was invented by Professor John Henry Pepper and English engineer Henry Dircks in the 19th Century. The Eyeliner™ 3D Projection System was conceived by Mr Uwe Maass, who designed the system after researching the old theatre illusion Pepper's Ghost. Introduced into theatres in the 1860's, Pepper's Ghost startled theatre goers with an effect that allowed live people or objects to slowly materialize into a scene. This illustration shows one early variation from the perspective of the stage. In this case the "ghost" is an actor located forward of and below the stage floor. The glass pane illustrates the reflection of the offstage "ghost" while the leftmost "ghost" simulates what the audiences actually see. Later versions of the invention included a lens to improve on the image but this was as far as Professor Pepper and Engineer Dircks managed to take the illusion, the main stumbling block being the inherent weight of glass and the fact that when a really large piece was set at a 45 degree angle it would brake under its own weight. Tiny Pistons to Drive Holographic Displays

Francesco Pessolano, manager of Imec's NVision program, shows off a prototype of a holographic display built with standard semiconductor processes. Pessolano suspects detailed 3-D video displays can be made by moving reflective microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) structures up and down like microscopic pistons.

Tupac 3d hologram 2012 - 4/16/12 2Pac Hologram Performs - "Hail Mary" & "2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted" With Snoop Dogg Tupac died in 1996, three years before the first Coachella festival took place, but that didn't stop him--or at least his bizarrely lifelike 3D image--from joining Dr. Dre onstage during Dre's much-hyped festival finale this year. Call it better gigging through technology: About halfway through Dre's 70-minute set, what appeared to be an actual shirtless Tupac appeared onstage, greeted the crowd with "What up, Coachella?"--and then traded rhymes with Dre's co-billed Coachella partner, the flesh-and-blood Snoop Dogg, on "Come With Me," "Hail Mary," and "Gangsta Party." Concertgoers at first seemed confused--the audience momentarily grew abnormally silent--and that confusion only increased when Tupac suddenly vaporized and vanished from the stage as quickly as he had materialized. All eyez were on him, so to speak, and then, POOF--'Pac was gone. *** AV Concepts, the company that handled the projection, at Coachella, they achieved the effect by rigging up a custom, 30-foot by 13-foot screen that could be lowered in seconds for a hologram that's slightly more advanced, the technology is based on a concept that's been around since the 1800s. It's called Pepper's Ghost and it works by partially reflecting light off a piece of glass from a hidden room. It is not indeed a 3D hologram but looks like one as it can be seen from multiple angles.

Tupac Shakur (2Pac) Hologram Performance @ Coachella 2012 Performance The Coachella festival is a place where minds routinely get blown, usually due to an awesome set or a killer reunion from one of your favorite bands. But on Sunday night it was thanks to the ghostly re-appearance of West Coast rap legend Tupac Shakur. He materialized on stage alongside his old friend Snoop Dogg during a crowd-pleasing set by the Doggfather and Dr. Dre, which also featured appearances from Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Warren G. The resurrection of 'Pac, who was murdered in 1996, would have been a face-melting surprise had word about the stunt not leaked out just a few days before the set. But the 100000 or so fans who were on hand still couldn't believe it when Tupac materialized on stage to rip off "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted." "What up, Coachella?" the shirtless, pants sagging MC asked the crowd before bouncing into the classic single "Hail Mary." "We worked with Dr. Dre on this and it was Dre's vision to bring this back to life," said Nick Smith, president of AV Concepts, the San Diego company that projected and staged the hologram. "It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life."
