Officials meet to usher in new era in Iraq

Top Iraqi and US leaders met in Baghdad on Thursday to mark the departure of remaining American troops. The ceremony was held at Camp Victory, which was the final American-controlled base in the country. A remaining 13000 US troops are scheduled to leave Iraq by the end of December as part of a mutual agreement between Iraq and the United States. The departure of US troops comes nine years after the US invasion that ousted Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein, in 2003. Iraq's president, Jalal Talabani, vowed that Iraq will adhere to the agreements that Iraq signed with the United States. "As we bid farewell to our American friends, who made a great contribution towards achieving the change, we would like to express our gratitude to them and we would like to send our regards to the great American people, President Barack Obama and the Congress. And we vow that Iraq, which has achieved national sovereignty, will be committed to the agreements and it will be a friend to the United States of America," Talabani said. Iraq's prime minister, Nuri al-Maliki, says that the withdrawal of US soldiers will build a better relationship between the two countries. "The withdrawal of the US troops will usher in a new phase in the relationship between Iraq and United States of America, in which the strategic framework agreement will be the cornerstone of bilateral relationship the two countries, and which includes political, economic, commercial, cultural and scientific sectors that will boost ...

The Young Laborers of Iraq

The Young Laborers of Iraq Years of conflict and political instability have left Iraq, one of the biggest oil exporters in the region, paralyzed and economically malnourished. Currently, 25 percent of the country's citizens live below the poverty line -- many of whom strive to make a living as best as they can. Given the difficult situation they are in, most people rely on odd jobs to earn money for their daily loaf of bread. Twelve-year-old Abbas Mohammed is a good example of this. Living in one of Baghdad's most impoverished districts, Sadr City, he spends his school holidays picking through trash for bottles which he can sell on the market -- all with the aim of supporting his desperate family. In the dumps, reporters also met Khammar - a young Kurdish woman, who wore a mask to block the horrendous stench which could be felt for miles. Iraq's leaders hope that, one day, the country's largely unused oil resources can be utilized to create an oil wealth large enough to rival that of Saudi Arabia. Given the current situation -- the chances of this happening soon look bleak. Iraq is mired in a political standoff and security crisis as the US marks the official end of its combat operations on August 31, seven years after it invaded the country to get rid of Saddam Hussein. How can Iraq resolve its political and sectarian differences; and what lessons - if any - has the US learned from its occupation?

Riz Khan - What comes next in Iraq?

More than two months after Iraq's elections, a government has yet to be formed. Adding to the political vacuum is concern over a possible security vacuum. Many questions surround Iraq's near-term future: Will the country lurch back toward sectarianism? Will Shia feel left out of the new government? Will Sunnis feel left out? What will the US leave behind when it finally leaves?
