Kennedy State Department Auditorium Washington, DC April 24, 1963 QUESTION: Mr. President, with Laos boiling up, could you assess for us the relative threats posed to the United States by the Soviet Union and Red China? THE PRESIDENT: No, I think it would be a mistake to attempt to make that assessment on this occasion. We have difficult problems in Southeast Asia. They directly involve, of course, the Soviet Union, as the Soviet Union is the Co-Chairman, and is also as I have already said a signatory to the Geneva Accord. It has assumed in the past a special responsibility for the maintenance of a neutral and independent Laos, in the Vienna statement which the Chairman and I made in June of 1961, committing ourselves to that result. We have also been conscious of the threat to the security of independent countries of Asia and Southeast Asia, which has been made quite clear by the Chinese, so I would say that we have serious problems with them both. We would hope that the Soviet Union would make an effort to fulfill its commitments under the Geneva Accord as the United States is attempting to do.

Researchers on the OPERA experiment at the INFN1's Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy today announced the first direct observation of a tau particle in a muon neutrino beam sent through the Earth from CERN, 730km away. This is a significant result, providing the final missing piece of a puzzle that has been challenging science since the 1960s, and giving tantalizing hints of new physics to come. The neutrino puzzle began with a pioneering and ultimately Nobel Prize winning experiment conducted by US scientist Ray Davis beginning in the 1960s. He observed far fewer neutrinos arriving at the Earth from the Sun than solar models predicted: either solar models were wrong, or something was happening to the neutrinos on their way. A possible solution to the puzzle was provided in 1969 by the theorists Bruno Pontecorvo and Vladimir Gribov, who first suggested that chameleon-like oscillatory changes between different types of neutrinos could be responsible for the apparent ...

After having studied under professor Pál Kadosa at the piano department of the Budapest Liszt Academy of Music, she graduated with distinction in 1948. In the same year, she won third prize in the Geneva International Piano Concours. Soon thereafter she established herself as a coveted pianist in Hungarys concert halls and gained renown in many foreign countries as well. Although her repertory ranges from Bach to contemporary composers, Mrs. Tusa has a special penchant for Liszt, Debussy and Bartók, whose works she has committed to gramophone records. As she has set herself the task of propagating the late, unknown works of Liszt, she frequently plays them at many of her recitals and has written a series of articles about them for a prestigious Hungarian musical journal. She made a widely acclaimed LP featuring some piano works of Debussy, (Images, Vols. 1-2., Estampes, LIsle Joyeuse), resulting in her being invited to serve as a jury member in the 1978 International Debussy Piano Concours staged at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Mrs. de Tignan, the stepdaughter and the last living relative of Debussy, sent Mrs. Tusa a letter which reads, among others: „I am glad that your country possesses such a fine ambassadress of my stepfathers compositions as you are.
