| 'Faraday's Candle' was inspired by public lectures that were presented more than 150 years ago. Society has changed, technology has advanced, language has evolved, but the phenomena underpinning a candle remain constant. Today, candles are rarely seen outside birthday cakes, churches, romantic dinners and power failures, but are no less fascinating. In fact these contexts provide an insight to the enduring value of the candle; celebration, worship, emotion and the ever-present need for light. Built around one man's genius for observation and experimentation, this show uses simple technology to explore natural phenomena and the processes of science. 'Faraday's Candle' has been produced by Inspiring Australia (an initiative of the Australian government) and re-science, an initiative of the Victorian government that aims to inspire the public with science. Faraday's Candle will be performed in Melbourne as part of the 2011 Fringe Festival. For more information visit: www.re-science.org.au and click on the Inspiring Australia box. |
