How the Stock Market Works - Cartoon Tutorial - Economics and Investing Video (1952)

thefilmarchive.org A stock market or equity market is a public (a loose network of economic transactions, not a physical facility or discrete) entity for the trading of company stock (shares) and derivatives at an agreed price; these are securities listed on a stock exchange as well as those only traded privately. The size of the world stock market was estimated at about $36.6 trillion at the start of October 2008. The total world derivatives market has been estimated at about $791 trillion face or nominal value, 11 times the size of the entire world economy. The value of the derivatives market, because it is stated in terms of notional values, cannot be directly compared to a stock or a fixed income security, which traditionally refers to an actual value. Moreover, the vast majority of derivatives 'cancel' each other out (ie, a derivative 'bet' on an event occurring is offset by a comparable derivative 'bet' on the event not occurring). Many such relatively illiquid securities are valued as marked to model, rather than an actual market price. The stocks are listed and traded on stock exchanges which are entities of a corporation or mutual organization specialized in the business of bringing buyers and sellers of the organizations to a listing of stocks and securities together. The largest stock market in the United States, by market cap, is the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). In Canada, the largest stock market is the Toronto Stock Exchange. Major European examples of ...

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com February 5, 1964 Elly May enters a Beverly Hills beauty pageant, but may have to face competition from Granny. Charles Clarence Robert Orville Cummings (June 9, 1910 -- December 2, 1990), mostly known professionally as Robert Cummings but sometimes as Bob Cummings, was an American motion picture and television actor. Cummings performed mainly in comedies, but was effective in his few dramas, especially two Alfred Hitchcock films, Saboteur (1942) and Dial M for Murder (1954). He achieved stardom in 1939 in Three Smart Girls Grow Up, opposite Deanna Durbin. His many film comedies include: The Devil and Miss Jones (1941) with Jean Arthur, and The Bride Wore Boots (1946) with Barbara Stanwyck. Cummings gave memorable performances in three notable dramas: Kings Row (1942) with friend Ronald Reagan, Saboteur (1942) with Priscilla Lane and Norman Lloyd, and Dial M for Murder (1954), with Grace Kelly and Ray Milland. Cummings also starred in You Came Along (1945), which featured a screenplay by Ayn Rand. The Army Air Forces pilot Cummings played ("Bob Collins") died off camera, but was resurrected ten years later for his television show. Cummings was chosen by producer John Wayne as his co-star to play airline pilot Captain Sullivan in The High and the Mighty, partly due to Cummings's flying experience. However, director William A. Wellman overruled Wayne and hired Robert Stack for the part. Cummings made his mark in the CBS Radio network's ...

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com March 18, 1963 The Sheriff has his hands full as a clan of mountain musicians descends on Mayberry. This is the first appearance of The Darlings. Trivia buffs will note that Andy's microphone cord is visible in his pants leg as he first approaches the Darling's truck at the watering trough. This marks the first appearance of Denver Pyle, who would go on to play Uncle Jesse on The Dukes of Hazzard The inscription on the trough reads: DAVID MENDELBRIGHT 1870-1933/LET NO HORSE GO THIRSTY HERE. Don Knotts does not appear in this episode. The Darlings check into Room #27 at the Mayberry Hotel. The Darling boys aren't very talkative. Although they sing in most of the episodes in which they appear, this is the only episode in which they speak. In the jail cell Aunt Bee asks if everyone has had enough to eat and one of the boys says "about to pop", and as she is leaving they all stand up and say "Thank You Aunt Bee/Good Night". Dud Wash spent three years in the Army. He brought back a "tiger eye" ring for Charlene. He bought it in Spokane, Washington. Dud Wash arrives on a Southern Buslines bus out of Macon, Georgia. The Darlings were a fictional family of musically-inclined hillbillies in the American TV sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. The Beverly Hillbillies: The Garden Party - Season 2, Episode 11 - Sharon Tate (1963)

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com December 4, 1963 The guests at Mrs. Drysdale's garden party get a surprise when the Clampetts show up. An edited version of The Fearless Vampire Killers was released, and Polanski expressed disgust at Ransohoff for "butchering" his film. Newsweek called it "a witless travesty", and it was not profitable. Tate's performance was largely ignored in reviews, and when she was mentioned, it was usually in relation to her nude scenes. Eye of the Devil was released shortly after, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer attempted to build interest in Tate with its press release describing her as "one of the screen's most exciting new personalities". The film failed to find an audience, and most reviews were indifferent, neither praising nor condemning it. The New York Times wrote that one of the few highlights was Tate's "chillingly beautiful but expressionless performance." The All Eyes on Sharon Tate documentary was used to publicize the film. Its fourteen minutes consisted of a number of scenes depicting Tate filming Eye of the Devil, dancing in nightclubs and sightseeing around London, and also contained a brief interview with her. Asked about her acting ambitions she replied, "I don't fool myself. I can't see myself doing Shakespeare." She spoke of her hopes of finding a niche in comedy, and in other interviews she expressed her desire to become "a light comedienne in the Carole Lombard style." She discussed the type of contemporary actress she wanted ...

The Beverly Hillbillies: Jethro's First Love - Season 2, Episode 6 - Sharon Tate (1963)

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com October 30, 1963 Jethro develops feelings for an exotic dancer named Chickadee, and brings her home to meet the folks. Sharon Marie Tate (January 24, 1943 -- August 9, 1969) was an American actress. During the 1960s she played small television roles before appearing in several films. After receiving positive reviews for her comedic performances, she was hailed as one of Hollywood's promising newcomers and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Valley of the Dolls (1967). She also appeared regularly in fashion magazines as a model and cover girl. Married to film director Roman Polanski in 1968, Tate was eight and a half months pregnant when she and her unborn child were murdered in her home, along with four others, by followers of Charles Manson. A decade after the murders, Tate's mother, Doris, in response to the growing cult status of the killers and the possibility that any of them might be granted parole, organized a public campaign against what she considered shortcomings in the state's corrections system. It resulted in amendments to the California criminal law in 1982, which allowed crime victims and their families to make victim impact statements during sentencing and at parole hearings. Doris Tate was the first person to make such an impact statement under the new law, when she spoke at the parole hearing of one of her daughter's killers, Charles "Tex" Watson. She believed changes in the law had ...

The Beverly Hillbillies: The Giant Jackrabbit - Season 2, Episode 16 - Sharon Tate (1964)

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com January 8, 1964 An escaped kangaroo reported by Granny as an oversized jackrabbit leads the others to suspect she has had too much moonshine. (This is the highest rated 30 minute American television episode as of 2008 since AC Nielsen went to their current ratings recording system in 1960). In the early 1980s, Stephen Kay, who had worked for the prosecution in the trial, became alarmed that Leslie Van Houten had gathered 900 signatures on a petition for her parole. He contacted Sharon Tate's mother, who said she was sure she could do better, and the two mounted a publicity campaign, collecting over 350000 signatures supporting the denial of parole. Van Houten had been seen as the most likely of the killers to be paroled; following Kay's and Tate's efforts, her petition was denied. Doris Tate became a vocal advocate for victims' rights and, in discussing her daughter's murder and meeting other crime victims, assumed the role of counselor, using her profile to encourage public discussion and criticism of the corrections system. For the rest of her life, she strongly campaigned against the parole of each of the Manson killers, and worked closely with other victims of violent crime. Several times, she confronted Charles Watson at parole hearings, explaining, "I feel that Sharon has to be represented in that hearing room. If they're [the killers] pleading for their lives, then I have to be there representing her." She addressed Watson ...

Jayne Mansfield Interview (1960)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Jayne Mansfield (April 19, 1933 -- June 29, 1967) was an American actress working both on Broadway and in Hollywood. One of the leading blonde sex symbols of the 1950s, Mansfield starred in several popular Hollywood films that emphasized her platinum-blonde hair, hourglass figure and cleavage-revealing costumes. While Mansfield's film career was short-lived, she had several box office successes. She won the Theatre World Award, a Golden Globe and a Golden Laurel. As the demand for blonde bombshells declined in the 1960s, Mansfield was relegated to low-budget film melodramas and comedies, but remained a popular celebrity. In her later career she continued to attract large crowds in foreign countries and in lucrative and successful nightclub tours. Mansfield had been a Playboy Playmate of the Month and appeared in the magazine several additional times. She died in an automobile accident at age 34. Mansfield's first movie role was as a supporting role as Candy Price in, Female Jungle, a low-budget drama, filmed in just ten days. Mansfield was paid $150 for her performance. The film was released in January of 1955, by producer, Burt Kaiser. In early 1955, Jayne was noticed by Warner Brothers and signed to a six month contract; Warner wanted Jayne to be the studio's Marilyn Monroe because Monroe was widely popular and made millions of dollars for 20th Century Fox. She was signed by the studio after one of its talent scouts discovered her ...
