Толерантность - удел слабых

Толерантность возвышенна и благородна или просто провокация как инструмент информационной войны ? В гостях у Михаила Швыдкого в передаче "Культурная революция" писатель Михаил Веллер и российский политолог Оксана Гаман-Голутвина. "Идеал толерантности (есть соответствующий документ ЮНЕСКО — Декларация принципов толерантности, подписанной 16 ноября 1995 года в Париже 185 государствами, включая Россию) выглядит красиво: "уважение многообразия культур... отказ от догматизма и абсолютизации истин и норм... гармония политических, этнических групп...". Понятно, что декларируемой толерантности противопоставлена интолерантность, то есть нечто противоположное общечеловеческим идеалам и ценностям гармонии, о достижимости которых дискутировали еще с античности: если идеал — нечто запредельное, никогда и никем не реализуемое, то с чего бы вдруг обижаться на отступления от него, поскольку отступить можно только от чего-то существующего; если все же достижим и его, реализованный, можно обнаружить в жизни, то он, как сама жизнь, преходящ — один идеал сменяется ему наследующим. Если согласиться с первым вариантом ответа, то споткнемся на том, что толерантность обязательна должна воплощаться в реальное поведение индивидов и социальных групп, но никак не может восприниматься "декларацией о намерениях" — о желаемом, но невозможном. Если остановимся на втором варианте, то опять-таки далеки от прямого попадания: "у каждого мгновенья свой резон, свои колокола, свои отметины", то есть ...

This is a four-part educational video on global population growth. The total length is about 34 minutes. It introduces key concepts in demography, the study of population patterns and changes. The topics covered are: 1. Historical and current global population trends 2. Reasons why populations change 3. Crude Birth Rates (CBR) and Crude Death Rates (CDR) 4. Natural Increase 5. The Demographic Transition Model 6. Determinants of Birth and Death Rates 7. Fertility and the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) 6. Falling global fertility rates 7. The impact of social and economic development on fertility 8. Replacement fertility rate 9. Age/Sex structure of populations 10. Population Pyramid Charts 11. Demographic Momentum Excepting the occasional editorial foray, there is nothing original in this video. My goal is to explain concepts that are well established in the field of demography in hopes of improving the quality of discussion of population issues on Youtube and beyond. Most of the statistics that I present in this video come from two sources: The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) and the US Census Bureau's International Data Base (IDB). The Demographic Transition Continued_The Developed Countries 3 of 3.wmv

This video expands the discussion of contemporary demographic trends to consider the Developed Nations of North America, Western Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. These countries have either reached or are moving toward the final stage of the Demographic Transition. They face a future of slow or negative population growth. The video discusses the implications of this situation as relates to the "social contract" (transfer payments from working people to retirees), economic growth prospects, and the texture of social and cultural life. I argue that the difficulties these nations will face are likely to be as challenging as those facing countries with still rapidly growing populations. Throughout the video, I reference an important recent book by Richard Jackson and Neil Howe, "The Graying of the Great Powers: Demography and Geopolitics in the 21st Century" (CSIS, 2008). Some might be familiar with Neil Howe, co-author of a number of books that integrate demographic and historical perspectives including "Generations" and "The Fourth Turning." I am among those who cannot quite buy into Howe's thesis that there is such a thing as a "generational personality" and that it follows a cyclical pattern. He never fails to produce an interesting book nonetheless. And for those who are bored by all this talk of demography (as well as those who are not), I recommend a truly great Islay Single Malt at the conclusion of the last part.
