Peter Sculthorpe's "Sydney Singing" - Kings Cross (excerpt)

Peter Sculthorpe, who turns 75 on 29 April 2004, is almost certainly Australia's most internationally-recognised composer. Best-known for his broad landscape compositions such as Kakadu and Earth Cry, he now turns his attention to his own backyard in this new work tailor-made for the SBS Radio & Television Youth Orchestra. It is scored for string orchestra with clarinet, harp and percussion soloists. "Sydney Singing" takes us on a journey through Sydney over the course of a day. From dawn over the harbour, to a lazy morning on Bondi Beach, a cultured afternoon at the Opera House, to dusk at the El Alamein Fountain, the neon lights of Kings Cross, and then through the wee hours of the city's existence to sunrise over the harbour city once more. Our programme includes interviews with Peter Sculthorpe in each of the locations described by his music. Our young soloists perform outdoors in these locations. The world première orchestral performance used for this broadcast was recorded live at the newly rebuilt Sydney Conservatorium of Music by SBS Radio.

Amitava Chowdhury is an author and a businessperson who always remains busy with his job schedule. Amitava has a sister and a special type of polio affects her. Suparna and Aparna are two sisters from a very upper class cultured family. Amitava feels a soft corner for Suparna, then Amitava marries Suparna, but after their marriage, Suparna feels awkward in Amitava's house. His sister cannot tolerate Suparna. On a picnic day while she was traveling with Suparna, faces an accident and die. Everybody thinks it as an accident, but originally it is a preplanned murder. Everybody knows that Kalpana had a psychological problem and she committed suicide. Soma too heard about it but she is now looking for a great future with Sudhansu. But at the night of their marriage function a Bengali middleclass lady enters into the drama and claims herself as Kalpana. Sudhansu denies it but did not show the proof to police and the marriage temporarily postponed.
