NEXT: The Documentary - Season 1 Trailer

NEXT: The Documentary celebrates the talents, struggles, and triumphs of four amazing Atlanta artists on the brink of stardom against the backdrop of a city on the verge of a renaissance. The film project grew out of the NEXT -- a quarterly concert series which showcases the brightest stars in the visual, literary, musical and film arts and a movement to galvanize Atlanta's community of artists and activists in a potent force for change. Founded in 2007 by a group of artists and activists, NEXT is unabashedly inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, a period of stunning cultural and social upheaval from 1920 to 1930 that took root in New York and then spread around the world. Nearly 80 years later, these are the "next" generation of transformative artists who have begun to emerge in Atlanta and are assuming the mantle of those that came before them. NEXT: The Documentary follows the rising stars of Hip Hop photographer Shannon McCollum, Jazz and roll duo Daysahead, spoken word slam champion Ayodele Heath and literary agitator Jelani Cobb. Every week, we tell a new story. This weekly webisode series was filmed by The Horne Brothers in collaboration with Mustard Seed Communications and Renaissance Walk Condominiums (where the documentary was filmed). Original music by Stic, man of dead prez. To learn more or join the movement, visit us at www.nextatlanta.org To learn more about Renaissance Walk, visit www.renaissancewalk.com

Emory portraits by Dawoud Bey

In partnership with the Transforming Community Project (TCP), the Visual Arts Department commissioned renowned photographer Dawoud Bey to develop a series of portraits of the Emory community that communicates the University's diversity. This commission celebrates the culmination of TCP's five-year exploration of Emory's historic and current experiences of race, gender, sexuality and other forms of human difference. While Dawoud Bey was an artist in residence for four weeks during the Spring 2010 semester, he met with various members of the Emory community in several settings on both the Atlanta and Oxford campuses, asking people to reveal something about themselves that defines or guides their lives. See the online exhibit that accompanies the permanent exhibit of 20 selected photographs by Mr. Bey at transform.emory.edu The Emory Project exhibit opens on February 1, 2011, at Emory's Visual Arts Gallery and continues through March 5th.
