| Ukraine is situated in the south-eastern part of Central Europe. It borders on Russia, Belorus, Moldova, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and Poland. Ukraine is second biggest country in Europe. It has developed industry and huge intelectual potential ( has one of the highest number of higher education students in the Europe ) Ukraine's history began with the Kievan Rus', the precursor to the East Slavs. From the 9th century the Kievan Rus' became a large and powerful nation but disintegrated in the 12th century. Ukraine became independent again after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Herewith began a period of transition to a market economy, in which Ukraine was stricken with an eight-year recession. The country is home to 45.6 million people: the two largest ethnic communities are Ukrainians (77.8%) and Russians (17.3%).
