| Independence Day Pyrotechnics Night at Citi Field. This first-ever fireworks show at the brand new Mets stadium was preceded by the New York Mets vs Cincinnati Reds game, a game in which the Mets lost by a final count of 6 to 8. Highlights of this game included 2 long HRs by the Cincinnati Reds first baseman, Joey Votto, who was having a MVP caliber season and a valiant 5-run comeback by the Mets on the bottom of the 5th inning after the Reds themselves scored 6 runs in the top of the frame. The game also saw the ejection of Mets manager, Jerry Manuel, after he protested against the umpire's hit-batsman call on Reds' third baseman, Scott Rolen, in the top of the 5th inning, a call which ultimately seemed to have rattled Mike Pelfrey's confidence on the mound and left him surrending 6 runs to the Reds in the inning. The pyrotechnic show itself seem to have characteristics of the firework show at the 2010 Olympic game, which saw fireworks shooting off from the top of the stadium's perimeter. A side effect of having fireworks launching within the stadium was that debris was falling back onto the fans during the show. This wouldn't have been a problem in the past, as the Mets used to have fireworks launching from parking lot at Shea stadium. Aside from this miniscule nuisance, this rather brief pyrotechnic show was definitely one enjoyable show. |
