Eritrea - The Beautiful City of Asmara

Here's what tourists are saying about beautiful Asmara, Eritrea. ------ The capital of newly independent Eritrea, Asmara is one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities in the whole of Africa, if not anywhere in the World. Situated at an elevation of 2400 metres above sea-level, its climate is pleasantly cool, but also dry and sunny for much of the year. Architecturally, it is a real feast for the eyes. Having been the centre of Italian colonial efforts in Africa in the first part of the 20th century, Asmara was blessed with beautiful buildings that would only draw praise in Italy as well. Even after the Italians were gone, the city has managed to escape the raveges of third world development, and has amazingly even survived the wars with Ethiopia intact. Current government policies also prevent it from become yet another sprawling, polluted African capital ringed with slums. Not only is Asmara beautiful, clean and pleasantly cool, it is also a very safe and relaxed city, where one can walk around at any time of the day or night without having to worry about safety, or even more minor hassles like beggars. The locals are a very cultured lot who seem to pride themselves on their city's Italian heritage, fondly call it "Little Rome", and cafeterias and pizzerias do a roaring trade along the city's main avenue. And in case you start wondering whether all this comes at a price, you might be delighted to hear that Asmara is also among the cheapest capitals in the continent ...

Flamenco Performance by Pastora Galván

Pastora Galván, an important new figure in flamenco dance, performed at the exhibition's opening of No Singing Allowed: Flamenco and Photography, at Aperture Gallery, on February 4, 2010. Aperture Foundation and Instituto Cervantes have partnered to celebrate and interpret the art of flamenco through photography in two exhibitions at the Aperture Gallery and Instituto Cervantes respectively, just prior to the launch of the 10th Annual New York Flamenco Festival on February 11. Both shows will remain on view through April 1, 2010. This exhibition is coproduced by Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo and Sociedad Estatal de Conmemoraciones Culturales, with the collaboration of Centro Andaluz de Flamenco, and is made possible thanks to the generous support of Antonio Banderas Fragrances by PUIG. The exhibition debuted at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Sevilla in April 2009 and is curated by José Lebrero Stals. Whether as social phenomenon or musical expression, flamenco has been of enduring interest and inspiration to photographers from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. While some photographers from outside of Spain went in search of it or encountered it by chance, to others flamenco and its practitioners are an essential, if not innate, aspect of their cultural heritage and their photographic work. Paul Scofield in Amadeus at the National Theatre

This was a magnificent production, and I was so lucky to work on it. Such eloquent writing from Peter Shaffer, leaving Peter Hall needing little more to do than allow these gargantuan talents to just get on with it. John Bury's set design and lighting were a revelation. I'd worked on many West End musicals with their huge rigs and staging, and here Bury's simplicity stunned me. It was minimal without being in the least bit austere. It was pure elegance. Except... except maybe for that huge chandelier (that my drinking buddy Steve Milne up in flies one day sent crashing to the stage!). Young Simon Callow's Mozart was the performance of a lifetime. The part seemed written for him. And maybe it was - Shaffer would sit in on rehearsals making notes which would then become re-writes. But the grand centerpiece was Scofield's Salieri. Watch this clip and weep. And somehow he did that every night... I also worked on the NT tour with Frank Finlay playing the lead (Scofield refused to tour) and it was remarkable how the two men could deliver the same lines, with the same directions, and yet be so very different. Finlay was Everyman, consumed with jealousy, and feeling he deserved Mozart's genius. While Scofield was the cultured civilized man who really could claim some genuine title to it. A little ironic perhaps that Finlay was an active catholic, and on the tour would seek out the nearest RC church to pray each morning. I shall never forget Scofield's performance. Such a ...
