Flexible Meeting Room Design - How to Create | DC Architects OTJ Architects

www.otj.com Proper meeting room design enhances creativity and productivity. OTJ Architects put flexible meeting room design into practice with this case study of our downtown office. Understanding the importance of space lets OTJ carefully accommodate your needs and goals. ------------------- Male: As architects, we have surveyed our clients over and over. They always asked for flexible meeting space at the top of their list. Female: To study flexible space and create a studio for our own work, we bought an old Pepco station built in the 1900s. While used as a discotheque in the 80s, by 2008, OTJ saw potential in the structures' location. Reusing the shell of the building, we were able to utilize the major end staircases as the core for flexible meeting space. The atrium became our communal adapted center designed to accommodate an array of purposes. Even our signature colorful block furniture reflects our goal to develop flexible interior space. Our central meeting room is built with glass sliding doors to completely expand and open, to house both private discussions and even full staff meetings. TVs on either side of the room allow for outside participants to see presentation from all viewpoints. The furniture, open spaces, adaptable transitions and functional technology allow for OTJ to embody their own methods of flexible design to accommodate multiple uses from ledges to social events.

How To Design a Steam Shower

One of the most luxurious bathroom features is a steam shower. However, there are a series of particular construction details that must be executed properly in order to have a functional and long lasting installation. The steam unit generator is a piece of mechanical equipment that is installed by the plumber. It needs to be located within close proximity to the shower itself and must have easy access for cleaning and maintenance. It generates heat, so it needs to be placed in a vented space and also requires a hardwired electrical connection. The shower enclosure itself needs to be finished with a special water proof membrane on all surfaces that is specifically designed to handle the extreme temperature and humidity conditions. Regular shower drywall is not sufficient. A high performance epoxy tile grout is also recommended instead of a standard sand and cement grout. Other important details include ensuring the ceiling of the steam shower is tiled with a slight slope to prevent excessive condensation from building up. Also, the shower glass needs to be installed tight on all sides and sealed with a gasket to prevent the steam from escaping. And finally, any bench or ledge structures must be built out of non-wooden material such as concrete block or styro-foam.

Natalie's Bungalow Renovation

Natalie from Calgary wrote us recently with the following question: "Hi John and Matthew, My house is a 1950′s bungalow and is approximately 1000 square feet. I would like to remodel the kitchen and would also like to remove the wall that divides the kitchen from the living room and dining room (basically, it would open up the whole area). A structural engineer told us that we could remove any wall on the main floor without adding a support system. How would you renovate my home?" -- Natalie

Kitchen Island Design Ideas

A kitchen island is a great feature to have in your home, but for some people, there is a concern that the inevitable mess around the kitchen sink will be visible from other rooms in the house. In our recently completed case study house, the open plan kitchen is located adjacent to both the living and dining rooms and the clients were concerned about views towards the kitchen sink. To deal with this issue, we decided to design a millwork storage unit that was part book shelf for the living room and part buffet storage for the dining room. We positioned the unit six inches off the floor to make it look like it is attached to the back of the island. We detailed the top of it to be about 12 inches higher than the kitchen counter. This millwork unit conceals any direct sight line from the living or dining spaces towards the sink while still maintaining an open concept feeling. On the kitchen side, the back of the unit houses the counter receptacles and a space to tuck in some small kitchen accessories or utensils.

2010 Mercedes Benz Biome Concept

At the 2010 Los Angeles Design Challenge, the designers from the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad, California, surprised everyone with a revolutionary vision. Taking their inspiration from nature, they designed a vehicle which is fully integrated into the ecosystem, from the moment of its creation right through to the end of its service life. The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept grows in a completely organic environment from seeds sown in a nursery. Out on the road the car emits pure oxygen, and at the end of its lifespan it can be simply composted or used as building material. "As the inventor of the motor car, we wanted to illustrate the vision of the perfect vehicle of the future, which is created and functions in complete symbiosis with nature. The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept is a natural technology hybrid, and forms part of our earth's ecosystem. It grows and thrives like the leaves on a tree" according to Hubert Lee, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad. This year the competition had called for the creation of a vision of a safe and comfortable 2+2 compact car featuring good handling and a first-class design, and weighing only 1000 lbs (around 454 kg/kerb weight). Mercedes-Benz symbiosis - a partnership with nature The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept symbiosis vehicle is made from an ultralight material called BioFibre and tips the scales at just 875.5 lbs (around 394 kg). This material is significantly lighter than metal or plastic ...
