| Trailer for the critically acclaimed Russian Sherlock Holmes films directed by Igor Maslennikov between 1979 and 1986. The films, which have become cult favorites, starred Vasily Livanov as Sherlock Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Doctor Watson. Livanov and Solomin are considered by many critics to be the most authentic Holmes and Watson. On April 23, 2002, Vitaly Solomin suffered a stroke during a performance of a play he had directed called "The Wedding of Krechinsky," at Moscow's Malyi Theatre. He died a month later. On February 20, 2006, Queen Elizabeth II awarded Vasily Livanov an honorary commandership in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) "for service to the theatre and performing arts" for his portrayal of Holmes. |
