Egypt organizes first contemporary arts festival since revolt

In a bid to put the Egyptian capital Cairo on the contemporary cultural map, organizers from Egypt and Europe have arranged the first major arts festival since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak last February. "In the past, before the revolution, the main festivals in Egypt were all organised by the government, by the Ministry of Culture or other government bodies. And it was more a propaganda tool rather than a way of creating an artistic event and therefore these festivals never really worked," artistic director Ahmed El Attar said. The headquarters of Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival are merely a short walk from the epicenter of last year's revolution, Tahrir Square. Attar says that this event will be different from past attempts. "And one of the main problems they had, is they had no programming so in this festival we have decided, like all festivals, to have programmers. So I programme the performing arts, because that's my field, and Mahmoud Refat programmed the music programme and Mia Jankowicz programmed the visual arts programme, and they're both, this is their field. That was an important decision to make from the beginning," he said. The aim of the organizers is to set new standards in freedom of expression especially in light of growing concerns of censorship in the presence of the new Islamist--led government. "I also think that now is a very important time to put landmarks in Egypt. We have an uncertain political future, people are worried of what ...

Trickle..., a kinetic art installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia

In this large-scale installation a 20 feet tall structure, with a pool of water for a floor collects the occasional drop of water falling from above. A 16 feet boat, suspended from the ceiling just high enough for the viewer to walk under its hull, pierces through the framework of the structure. Descending from 18 high, a wooden staircase enters the structure as well. It also allows the viewer to pass beneath it, but does not allow access as it enters the water. This work is sensitive to a viewers position within the gallery space and, accordingly, will have events take place that involve the lighting, video, audio, and a number of kinetic elements.

Nicola López: Conversations with Contemporary Artists

Learn more at www.guggenheim.org/cca. The Elaine Terner Cooper Education Fund: Conversations with Contemporary Artists Nicola López Tuesday, October 18, 2011, 6:30 pm Nicola López (b. 1975, Santa Fe, New Mexico) works with printmaking, drawing, and installation to describe and reconfigure our contemporary and increasingly urban landscape. Her sculptural prints and intricate constructions investigate the nature of place and mankind's complex relation to it. In Landscape X, created as part of the Guggenheim's ongoing Intervals series, López assembles a site-specific sculptural collage environment on view in three levels of the rotunda. Utilizing elements from the construction site as a point of inception, López employs symbols of urban infrastructure to craft a graphic expanse of forms which boldly expand into the Frank Lloyd Wright space. Inaugurated in 2001, this lecture series features artists reflecting on their work and current issues in the art world. Rechristened in spring 2006 as the Elaine Terner Cooper Education Fund: Conversations with Contemporary Artists, these talks provide an opportunity for the public to hear from the most innovative international artists working today and to learn about their creative processes. Both established and emerging artists working in all mediums have participated in this enlightening program. The roster has included Slater Bradley, Tacita Dean, Roni Horn, Emily Jacir, Christian Marclay, Aleksandra Mir, Catherine Opie, Tino Sehgal ...
