44 Killed in Russia Plane Crash

A passenger jet crashed in heavy fog about a mile short of a runway in northwestern Russia. Officials say 44 were killed among 52 people in that TU134 of RusAir. As Interfax, among deaths are most of board of managements of Gidropress, a part of Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corporation (Russian: Росатом) and a soccer referee named Vladimir Pettay.

TU-154 Emergency landing - which is operated by Russian military

Moscow - Russian military prosecutors launched an investigation on Wednesday after an amateur video captured a defence ministry jet lurching terrifyingly out of control in skies close to Moscow. Videos of the Tupolev jet posted on YouTube by witnesses show the aircraft twisting from side to side uncontrollably before pilots manage to land it safely at a military aerodrome outside Moscow. "The military prosecutors have launched a probe which should establish the reasons for the mid-air incident that almost led to an aviation disaster," a spokesperson for the chief military prosecutor's office told the RIA Novosti news agency on Wednesday. The Tu-154 aircraft, dating back to the 1960s, was dubbed the "dancing plane" by bloggers. The spokesperson for the chief military prosecutor's office told RIA Novosti that the aircraft's steering system had malfunctioned and praised the pilots for managing to land safely in a built-up area. "During a test flight, the steering system broke down on the TU-154B-2 plane belonging to the Defence Ministry's 800th air base," the spokesperson said. First flight in 10 years "Thanks to the great professionalism and supreme skill of the pilots, the crew managed to land on the second attempt at Chkalovsk aerodrome, avoiding casualties among the airforce and the local population." The video posted on April 30, which has been watched more than 380 000 times, says that the aircraft was being flown for the first time after a 10-year break.

Russian Military Might ★ The Bear Returns

The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are the military services of Russia, established after the Dissolution of the Soviet Union. On 7 May 1992 Boris Yeltsin signed a decree establishing the Russian Ministry of Defence and placing all Soviet Armed Forces troops on the territory of the RSFSR under Russian Federation control. The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces is the President of the Russian Federation. Although the Russian armed forces were formed in 1992, the Russian military dates its roots back to the times of the Kievan Rus'. The number of troops is permitted by decree of the President of Russia. On January 1, 2008, a quota of 2019629 units, including the military 1134800 units, was set. In 2010 the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated that the Russian armed forces numbered about 1027000 active troops and in the region of 20000000 reserves, (largely ex-conscripts) but a significant military reform is underway which will cut the number of active troops. According to SIPRI, Russia's annual defense spending stands at about $52.7 billion in FY2011
