At times the Selecção were promising, at times they were infuriating. A trio of defensive errors handed Umut Bulut a brace and Pepe an unwanted own goal, whilst Nani's clinical finish was a rare bright spot on a night when Cristiano Ronaldo also missed a penalty. After last weekend's insipid display against Macedonia, and in front of a full house at the Estádio da Luz, Paulo Bento fielded a far less experimental starting eleven, making six changes in total. Only debutant Miguel Lopes could reasonably be described as a surprise selection, with the Porto-owned utility man coming in for João Pereira at right back. Elsewhere, Hugo Almeida started ahead of Hélder Postiga in the central front three role, after a profligate performance from the Zaragoza forward in Leiria. Almeida almost put Portugal ahead after less than a minute. Ronaldo found himself some space out wide directly from the kick off and produced a fine cross, but the burly centre forward could only direct his header over the bar. It was an early signal of intent from the home side, who covered more ground in the opening quarter of an hour than during the entire contest with Macedonia -- or so it seemed.
