Distilled Demographics: Urbanization

A few years ago, it was announced that half the world's population now lives in urban areas. When we think of urbanization, we tend to think of sprawling cities with skyscrapers. However, the definition of "urban" varies greatly from country to country. In this video, PRB senior demographer Carl Haub, discusses the global diversity of "urban" areas and the implications of a more urban world. "Distilled Demographics," PRB's video series, highlights key demographic concepts such as fertility, mortality, and migration. Through these short videos, you can learn demography's real-world application and impact. "These videos not only show that demography can be exciting, but also highlight how population trends and issues affects the well-being of us all," says Carl Haub, senior demographer PRB. "Fertility, mortality, and migration—along with other demographic issues—play a major role in determining what kind of opportunities and challenges people face in their communities and countries."

"Demography Is Dead," Says John Butler, Former Head of Communications and Media at dunnhumby

John Butler, the former Global Head of Communications and Media at dunnhumby, gave a solo presentation at SES London 2011 entitled, "Monetising Social Commerce: Brand Loyals, Brand Mavens and Today's Social Targeting Revolution." Butler has launched, via one of dunhumby's global retailers, a mechanism for connecting the power of purchase-based behavioural targeting and social networks. Without revealing which retailer was involved, he shared the results gained from live tests showing: Demography is dead as a targeting mechanism. Purchase based targeting regularly generates above 50 percent response rates versus 2 percent in traditional Direct Marketing. Combined with purchase-based targeting, social targeting is showing up to 80 percent response rates and creates a clear "network of purchase" that can be used by Brands to market to consumers. Marketing with purchase-based and social targeting allows a scientific definition of uncommitted, repertoire, preference, respectful or devoted buyers that enables brands to grow categories, share and profit by an average of 25 percent to their competition. John Butler is a leading independent consultant in consumer-targeted and social media. He is the former head of dunnhumby's communications & media practise and a member of dunnhumby's executive board. dunnhumby reaches 350 million consumers through its work with Tesco, Kroger, Macy's, Casino group and others. dunnhumby is the company behind Tesco clubcard and acts as the primary ...

21. Global Demography of Abortion

Global Problems of Population Growth (MCDB 150) Abortion is very common: worldwide, and in the US, there is 1 abortion for every 3.2 live births. In places where contraception is not used, abortion is used as birth control. Neither legal nor religious proscriptions have a strong effect on abortion rates. In countries where abortion is illegal, maternal death rates are extraordinarily high. Legal, medically done abortions are safer than getting pregnant. Psychological responses depend on the individual and the culture. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Abortion Data 11:22 - Chapter 2. Country Level Abortion Data 21:59 - Chapter 3. Repair, Regeneration and Replacement Revisited

Dr. David G. Armstrong presented the fourth lecture of the College of Science's Living Beyond 100 lecture series on February 14, 2012. He is Professor of Surgery and Director, Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at the University of Arizona. Abstract: More than 250 years ago, the philosopher Auguste Comte suggested that "Demography is Destiny". It is this change in demography that is leading toward that destiny: nothing less than a transformation of medicine and our collective relationship with it. From advances in composite tissue transplantation to stem cells to bionic human-machine interfaces, we are experiencing a present-day revolution in replacement parts. As these advances merge with similar progress in consumer and medical devices, the aging individual will be forced to ask the question: What of us will remain innately "us"?

AIM Distinguished Lecture Series on Demography - Jeffrey Williamson's Presentation Part 1 of 7

The Asian Development Bank (ADB)-Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Knowledge Hub for Trade and Investment, in cooperation with Asia Society Philippine Foundation, Inc., the Knowledge Management Association of the Philippines, the University of Santo Tomas' College of Commerce and Business Administration, and the University of the Philippines' School of Economics featured the work of Dr. Jeffrey Williamson, Laird Bell Professor of Economics at Harvard University and former Chair of the Economics Department. Last March 15, 2011, Dr. Williamson conducted a lecture on, "Demographic Transitions, Accumulation, and Emigration." All countries go through demographic transitions during their industrial revolutions. Not only does the transition cause a rise followed by a decline in population growth, but it generates stages of small, big, and then small adult labor force shares. This has had implications for accumulation, capital inflows, growth and emigration.
