Only recently it was reported in the media that a woman was attacked with acid by a man in broad day light and that too in the UK. Acid violence is defined as the deliberate use of acid to disfigure, maim and blind the victims. In over 80% of cases women are the victims and often children are severely burnt as they are with their mother at the time of the attack. It is believed that over 80% of the victims of acid attacks worldwide are women. The statistics are frightening, and the stories are heart-breaking. There are hundreds and thousands of these cases worldwide but most stories go unheard of. In Pakistan alone there are over 100 reported attacks a year. Many attacks go unreported as the victims fear reprisals. Islamic Help, a UK based NGO, has been working with survivors of acid attacks for a number of years.
