The very first time I saw this footage, it only saw a few seconds of it in the air with no size or motion reference, and I swore it was a fake of someone flying an RC plane. Then I watched another video, and just, wow.... I can't even imagine how scary that must have felt in the cockpit. O_O

It was no demo. The scaredest thing is that it's where I own some real estate in Russia. I am not Russian, I am a South African born and bred. That plane had been out of commission for 10 yrs and had had routine maintenance and preflight checks, but something went wrong with the avionics (the autopilot wouldn't work, failed to switch off manually) and the hydraulics went out. The pilots had no rudder control. None whatsoever. They only had thrust and horizontal steer to keep it up in the air.

it's a flight demo. All planes on the ground are Tupolev, the shaking is due to extreme usage of the rudder and it is showing how the plane is able to recover flight stability. But on youtube you can sell anything for anything else....

That has got to be the best piece of flying I've ever seen! I never did get why Tupolev gave this plane anhedral rather than dihedral wings... Certainly doesn't help the dutch roll and dihedral effects seen here...

But the bulk of those crashes are due to poor and miserable maintenance of the airplanes. It was not like that in Soviet times when standards and maintenance were utterly strict. This announcement has NOTHING to do with the quality and/or performance of the Tu-154. Put any Boeing or Airbus under the poor maintenance records many Tu-154s were subject to in recent years, and they will just crash the same.

Countless European friends have flown in Tu´s and IL´s and tell me the experience is IDENTICAL, if not better, when compared with other Western airlines (and better than flying on any shitty present-day American airlines). The recent incidents with Tupolevs have been mainly due to the poor maintenance of recent years. The pilot on this specific bird is not from this world; he should be in the air force or something like that or in the Russian space program.
