"Finding, opening ...
"Finding, opening and collecting loot" is exactly what the advertisements promised and exactly why I played the game. It did not dissapoint me. This game is about the journey, not the destination.

Thats the point, theres absolutely no foreshadowing of that. You're robbed of the final battle you expect and want, and of the reward you expect and want, in one fell swoop. It might even have been fine if you pursued the destroyer into the vault and had another section of the game about that. There are good twist endings, and bad twist endings, and Borderlands has one of the latter.
To those angry at ...
To those angry at not being able to go in the vault: That's the point. There isn't anything in the Vault. The Angel sent you to kill the Destroyer because it would otherwise be unleashed and eradicate the entire galaxy. There is no treasure, fame, power, or women. Just the Destroyer.
