Do you think that divine intervention was necessary to get life started or do you just think that the nature of the universe must have been designed? The former can be refuted by evidence, and the latter, while tentatively the realm of cosmology, is still very open to whichever pet philosophy you happen to prefer.

Not fundamentally different at all. We've observed so many steps from simple chemistry to living organisms that there really isn't anywhere left to claim that the known behavior of matter isn't enough to explain it.

First it showed normal hemoglobin molecules in red carrying little blue oxygen molecules. Then it showed the mutated protein with its alternate amino acid in green. This can cause the hemoglobin molecules to bunch up as shown. The long strands of bunched hemoglobin distort the shape of the cells, increasing their chance of getting stuck. This can both decrease the lifespan of the cells, increasing vulnerability to other conditions, and reduce the blood's capacity to carry oxygen.

I haven't read any of the comments yet, except yours but I'm assuming that "religion" as you call it, is probably brought up because so many people think this complex and awesome display of obvious design is some sort of oops by natural selection. They then, get into big debates with people who are not believers of such things and rely on the "still trying to figure it out with science in 2012 and on, prob forever". Personally I don't understand how anyone could claim random mutation here.

The technique you are talking about does not exist. Light can't help us. Electron beams are too strong and will destroy a cell before we gain anything. But I hope some day, people will find a way to show real image. It will be the most important breakthrough in biology and material science.

molecules are highly sensitive and most attempts to view them end up destroying them in the process. perhaps in the future of nanotechnology a nano sized engineered organic "camera" could be injected into a cell and emit harmless reflective particles (like photons) and store the result although that's highly theoretical.
