I was under the assumption that lightwave, while less robust than maya, was a bit easier to learn.

First of all: Nice Tutorial :) Looks a little bit like an older Version of Blender...
Lightwave, Maya, 3D ...
Lightwave, Maya, 3D Studio Max, Are wonderful at full price, buy one at a discount with student ID if you can. For hobbyists and a casual game edit. Try Blender or GameStudio. play withit in the editors or tweak it and play with it in an Unreal Tournament 3 or Crysis SDK.. Modeling is fun but it takes planning, patience and more time than most care to admit. No point in spending hundreds of dollars unless you know you'll like modeling.

I agree, NewTek has ...
I agree, NewTek has been very good to independents and amatuers and their boards are a lot friendlier to newbies (unlike some forums that try and make it seem that anything you wish to do takes decades of experience.) I believe in supporting people who support the filmmaking community.

I now consider them ...
I now consider them to be equal in terms of interface design. For a relatively early-stage learner, Maya may be somewhat intimidating in the beginning, however it is in fact very intuitive. LightWave and Max both have very clean interfaces, which tend initially to feel more friendly. There is no doubt that Maya is the more capable of the three in terms of physics, particle effects and animation. I have yet to sufficiently explore its modeling facilities to accurately judge them.
Ok, so it's been 1 ...
Ok, so it's been 1 and a half years since you've uploaded this. I have a question. Out of Maya, Max, and LightWave, which one would you consider now to be more user friendly?

I don't know really, I quit Maya after i made my first scene and tried to render it, it completely pissed me :D

A few weeks ago I would have agreed; however as I have begun to learn Maya recently, I have actually found the interface to be very intuitive. :)
