I think the reason is that Andy is freakishly stong with his fingers (seriosuly, he can kill a bear with those taps), wich makes his tapping sound like normal tones. But doubt the song would work on nylon strings tough.

Id recommend a guitar with a satin finish rather then heavy gloss. Gloss protects the wood; however it silvery dampens the tone due to weighing down the wood when the sound is trying to vibrate inside the instrument.
