Thanks, kunschikov, I believe they should stay there. When I was growing up (long time ago) when we "locked" our door at night it was only the screen door (so the cool night air could come in). Any one could have cut it and walked in. Not now. It makes me wonder if people today are less honest or there is no longer fear of punishment.

I think the 'Hammer & Sickle' emblems will be forever on this buildings, along with the stars on the Kremlin's towers. As for "the poor side of town"... in soviet cities never were such areas as 'poor districts' or 'ghetto'es, child can walk in any area of any town in any time without fear to be killed/robbed/etc, in the whole area of 1/7 of earth. To be honest, parents and grandparents prohibited to me some areas of my hometown when I was a kid, but it was exaggeration.
