The Universe HAS NO EDGES. NONE AT ALL. You can travel in one direction for as long as you like, but at the same time the Universe is NOT INFINITE. There is finite stuff in the Universe. It's like the surface of a planet, you can travel forward as long as you like, but the surface isn't infinite, you will just end up where you started. The same goes with the universe, travel long enough in one direction, and you'll end up where you started.

I just want to give you the advice to find the fun in learning all sorts of new stuff. Not just because it might bring money. You have to find something to make a living, yes. If you are interested in it too, great. But this is rare. Learn besides anyway. The things you are good at will find you sooner or later.

Hi! I cannot tell you either if it is easy to make a living from astronomy. It is more a hobby for me, I am interested in all sorts of things just because I am curious and want to know why things are like they are. I began to study psychology originally, but it did not help me a lot to understand people. Computer graphics were a hobby, now I live from visualisations of machinery. And my other interests help me to make interesting hobby animations.

On average, a supernova explosion within 33 light-years of the earth occurs every 240 million years. So it is not impossible, but I would not worry too much about it... IK Pegasi is in that range and it will go nova. But at the time it does it will be a lot farther away. Hard to say, it is like a bee hive of moving stars in our galaxy... And timespans beyond the life of humans. :)
