I think its silly ...
I think its silly myself, but I can't agree with all the people claiming that this is the death of Gibsons. If I understand right, the issue is a certain type of ebony, which is usually a fingerboard wood. In the case of solid body electrics, the wood has only a small effect on tone. Its the electronics that make a Gibson sound like a Gibson. I can't agree that using a different fingerboard wood will have any drastic effect on quality.

Agreed! Go buy a guitar now because once those vintage woods are used up thats it for what the true sound of a Gibson use to be!! After that it will be like plastic sounding guitars!! Its amazing how the government can go all out to destroy guitar company's like Gibson yet they've got billions of dollars of misery with drugs destroying people lives!! Cherish you LP Standard my friend because in little less than 5 years from now you & my LP 59 Standard VOS will be collectables! All Guitar company's (Gibson incl) will be using cheaper wood for their guitars. Which is bad!! Its the worse news for the sound of the guitar in the future. I did at a Gibson convention corporate gig back in 2007 & they explained whats happening right now with the wood situation. In a nutshell what you get from a Japanese made Gibson today will be the standard across.

If the exotic hardwood became a fine instrument is very good. The musician factory use a small pice of cut-wood a year. But made by anithing else by wooden wich is not need is wrong. Only the Gibson factory use thise wood.. the Ovation, Fender, Martin, Taylor, Musicman, Takamine, Segall , Colling, etc...factories not ?
