I, too, love the craziness of the series, but, without the other elements, it wouldn't be much better than your average horror movie on which some guy randomly kidnaps, tortures and kills strangers for NO REASON AT ALL! (what's with that, anyway? that makes no sense! -.-* ) I love higurashi as a whole. I love everything about it! :] ...its a masterpiece, no doubt.

Most people love this anime because of the "violence"...for me, it is bigger than that. Sure, the "dark part" of higurashi is important, too, but that is NOT higurashi's core. It is also about mystery, friendship, hope, tragedy, metaphysics, the characters' backgrounds and feelings, how everything is connected, Oyashiro's curse, the characters' struggle to overwrite fate, and so much more...Higurashi is one of the most complete series out there (it is also a psychological genre, which i love!)

Adding on to what Pantalaimonish said, Shion was mad about that fact that Mion cried so much about not getting the doll despite being able to see Keiichi, aka the one Mion had feelings for, while she herself had to try to be strong while having no idea if Satoshi was alive let alone where he was.

The song sounds like a cute happy song when you listen to it and don't pay attention to the subs, but then you realize it's not a happy sort of song at all. Which makes it even more creepy.

@HikuDraw When Mion didn't get the doll, she cried about Keiichi to Shion. Shion thought that it's unfair that Mion still has her crush near her, and then she thinked about Satoshi.... and started to kill everyone.

okay, so i thought i had higurashi figured out... but, in the end of the song, why does mion say something about the doll that wasn't given to her? Plus, in one of the episodes rika said that keiichi avoided a certain fate by giving mion the doll instead of rena, but wasnt that a false reason shion (imposing as mion) used to explain why she went, well, crazy? The doll really had nothing to do with shion killing everyone, right? or were the watanagashi and eye opening chapter in different worlds?
