I don't agree that he was the best athlete in American team sports. There were and are players in other sports who have had his level of dominance on the field/court in terms of skill and athleticism. What made him stand out is his marketability. He was an amazing player, don't get me wrong, but with the years media hype and ads calling him the greatest thing since Jesus, many overstate his place and make him the Chuck Norris of basketball. So most of what you said holds, but the last line isnt.
