Marc-André Hamelin performs Debussy: "Feux d'artifice" from Preludes, Book 2

not bad at all, apart from the unnecessary pedalling at the start and during the final descending glissando (Zimmerman does that too - God knows why, it's not in the score and it just sounds wrong)

@SightReadingPianist. Good point. But I think @John11inch was really more concerned about impressing us with his sense of judgement than engaging in an informed conversation about pianistic skill.

Sorry, I didn't tag @Frozentoes1 and @John11inch
The prelude is very ...
The prelude is very very well played, very nice performance, I love it, but John11inch is right about the notes, you can't deny Hamelin missed some of them and had a pair of small memory problems...anyway this doesn't "disturb" a great performance. About the first 2 pages, not all the pianists play them in the same way (I personally use a different hands division) but it's not important if the final result is good, as it is here!

I'm amazed by his ...
I'm amazed by his performance of Feux d'artiface simply from the first minute of it. He does the swirl with his left hand alone at times. No darting to hit those octaves with the right hand. It sounds so much smoother.

After hearing Michelageli live Hamelin sounds like a college student..

@MisterSimnock. It would seem that 11inch has overreached himself yet again.

@John11inch. Graduate study in philosophy at Princeton? Which year are you in, John? Or have you hit a wrong note?

At the risk of displaying my shocking ignorance, and possibly my lack of intellectual capacity, I was under the distinct impression that one of the reasons for acquiring a liberal education was to be able to engage in a civilized discussion without coming across as a pompous ass. After all, intellectual sophistication is of diminished value if it is not coupled with humanity. In plain English - a little humility makes the medicine go down.
@Frozentoes1 @ ...
@Frozentoes1 @John11inch who truly gives a shit honestly? It's not like Hamelin is reading these comments and feels warm and fuzzy because his playing is being defended against John. John had something to say. Frozentoes had something else to say. Perhaps Hamelin would agree with John in this case and say that he did play this sloppily. Or maybe he wouldn't We will never know though because he doesn't give a shit.

And, on the subject ...
And, on the subject of giving "notes", I hope you're aware you didn't actually respond to anything I said, but only how I said it. Is it that you're too stupid to lodge an argument, or that you're too stupid to even realize that's what you did? Just curious.
Can you please ...
Can you please define "definition"? I'm sure you'll find what you did is quite identical to supplying a "definition". "Explicating" on the word, followed by the phrase "épater la Bourgeoisie" - while referring to the populist ideology of Brandon - is hilariously hypocritical, and just shows you lack the capability to take your own advice *and* the ability to actually impress. If you think words like "sophomorically", "guiled" and "voir dire" are "fancy speak", you need to hit the books.
And you have ...
And you have provided us all with quite an impression of yourself. Good on you.
Please note that I ...
Please note that I did not offer a definition, but merely a very brief explication to draw a comparison with the word "criticize". You unfortunately missed that very basic point. However, I must congratulate you. I must say, I'm very impressed with your fancy speak, as Dr. Victoria Brandon would say (see her book entitled "In Defense of Plain English"). In your attempt to "épater la Bourgeoisie", you have managed to use a great many fancy words to say absolutely nothing. Good job.
In addition, the ...
In addition, the sophomorically guiled attempt at questioning my authority on the subject is appelate and immediately refuted by a glance at my own youtube channel, where you will surely be more than satisfied in a voir dire: reference to my pianism (and this piece *is* in my repertoire), my current, graduate study in philosophy (at Princeton, mind you; any, further discouse regarding aesthetics is to your disadvantage) and my knowledge of repertoire, given the 1000+ contemporary works there.
Your definition of ...
Your definition of "critique" is narrow, contestable (Adorno and Duchamp would immediately refute nearly everything you just said) and idealistic in regard to the capacity of the value in which one can place, and can assume can be derived from, commentary(ies) on youtube, nor did I claim to have supplied, or have attempted to supply, a "critique," by my definition, or yours, thus rendering your comment dually inaccurate and malapropos.
