Cosmos - Carl Sagan - 4th Dimension

...

Well, he was just ...

Well, he was just trying to show or explain in a way more simpler, how we cannot comprehend another fourth dimension in the same way that the square couldnt point upwards or downwards

The 4th dimension ...

The 4th dimension IS time, the point is there could be beings that live in a dimension where they travel through time the same way we travel through space...

What if the fourth ...

What if the fourth dimension is time. Not a ludicrous theory. It's a measurement that we cannot manipulate or travel through, and it describes not the size but the duration on an object.

they would have ...

they would have completely different way of understanding things. Maybe a 4th dimensional creature exists but cannot even comprehend how a 3 dimensional creature can see or blorg the way he can. The introduction of beings in these different dimensions leaves so many questions that we can't even explore. There may be 2 dimensional creatures but we have no way to perceive how anything could exist in 2 dimensions. so how can anything like an atom exist in either 2d or 4d.

They wouldn't. Not ...

They wouldn't. Not in the same way we know "sight" anyway.

It's not just a ...

It's not just a matter of what he's used to seeing. His eyes can still only see in 1 dimension. He could see FROM the third dimension, but his view of flatland would consist of a 1d line with no background. So most of the time he would see a tiny slice of empty space, with an occasional glimpse of a piece of a familiar object which would appear strange and distorted, not to mention it would appear to be morphing in seemingly impossible ways.

The 4th dimension ...

The 4th dimension is an abstract mathematical concept, and mathematics is not bound to realty as long as you define the rules by which mathematical operations are performed in the area of your study. However, the maths of more than 3 dimensions has actual applications in cosmology, most notably in general relativity, which is our very best description of gravitation. I would recommend the Wikipedia article on 4-dimensional space. Then come again and tell me why only 3 dimensions "exist".

what an awesome ...

what an awesome example lol interesting stuff that gets you thinking, love it.

Sagan believes in ...

Sagan believes in and has faith in his 4th dimensional cube which he can not show or prove. And Sagan says faith is believing in something that has no evidence.....like the 4th Dim. He is acting more like a religious High Priest a lot more then he is a scientist!!!!!!

It's a thought ...

It's a thought experiment. There is obviously no physical object that has 0 width.

My question is, if ...

My question is, if the 2d flatlanders were absolutely flat hence they have no height, how is it possible for them to have let say for instance eyes on their sides? Now even if they do have viewing on their sides how would they be even able to see their other flatlanders if they are absolutely flat as well?

Oh my god

Oh my god

Oh god I can't ...

Oh god I can't unhear it now ! /o\

J'ai toujours ...

J'ai toujours admiré ce savant qui sait vraiment comment vulgarisé la science à sa façon.

Carl Sagan=Agent ...

Carl Sagan=Agent Smith

Who else wishes ...

Who else wishes Carl Sagan was the one to make Miegakure?

For example, if ...

For example, if everything was within an area with a height of "1", then using the terms "up and down" would be irrelevant because objects would be unable to pass above or below each other and an object would never have a force from that area acted upon it that would send it up or down.

I think that a two ...

I think that a two dimensional object could not exist within our universe given our current laws of physics. However, i could see all matter being 11 dimensional, but only specific dimensions have a value different from 1 (1 being 1 unit of the base particle of everything.)

Bear in mind the ...

Bear in mind the flat lander would have no structural strength whatsoever in the third dimension, it would be ripped apart by the slightest force in a third dimension. If that was a real flat lander I can only imagine how this would go "The apple may be a little annoyed at this conclusion and in such a not friendly gesture from dimension to dimension makes a conta*BOOM*..." He couldn't do this scene without splattering the square all over the room.

@iAnimeFanboy ...

@iAnimeFanboy actually i think the movie name you're looking for is "Cube 2: Hypercube"
