The term "Bushi" was used to refer to all warriors. During and after the 12th century, it became more popular for the aristocracy to call them "Samurai", as they saw them as servants as well as martial men while the soldiers themselves stuck with Bushi. The term does not originate from "Jidaigeki" (Samurai Drama) popular culture. By the time Japan was industrializing, Samurai was the preferred names for soldiers.
