To Wisconsin farm kid: Yes, the cars can be packed tight as sardine cans, and tighter, at rush hour. Nothing like having some stranger's face jammed into the hollow of your neck at 8:30am. =) Rampant crime? Nah. People have a very outdated image of NYC's crime rate. Crime has gone down almost 75% in the last 20 years. Of course there's still crime, but nothing like how it used to be. Noise? Well, we're used to it, but a country person might need some adjustment time. X)

Agreed it is not often relative to the number of passenger rides. However as an absolute number, it happens often. If you ride long enough, you will see an incident or the aftereffects of a line being shut down by an incident. There are many people who fall off the platform or train and survive as well. Cheers.
