Excellent Aikido Demonstration
When I was younger ...
When I was younger I used to do Shotokan Karate and myself and two others wandered into a Aikido class after we had finished. I watched and thought at the time that the teachers partner was just throwing himself around. However, because we where young we made comments and complete arses of ourselves and where invited onto the matt. All three of us attacked the instructor and we where disabled in seconds and from that moment I had utter respect for Aikido. Martial arts is about learning wha
I would like to ...
I would like to thank you for a sensible conversation, and you are right you have to find what works for you. I always avoid fighting, although this is not always posible. We must train for all posible forms of attack, but only defend against a knife if you can not get away. A knife only has to catch you once in the wrong place to take your life. All forms of martial arts have their Strengths and weaknesses we must learn to adapt the techniqes to suit our abilty to defend one self.
don't get me wrong, ...
don't get me wrong, i understand what you are saying entirely. some Martial arts just don't work for people. if you look at it this way, kung fu might not really seem practical either, but it is still used because people find ways to make it work, just like people do with any martial arts. I will say this, you are very educated and you think about the "What if's", and i think we need more of that in this world.
you have just ...
you have just stated the main fundamental of aikido, which is don't fight. I agree, because that, along with running, is the best self defense. and samurai defended themselves and their shogun from people high on emotional rage with intent to kill all the time, most of the time using the Katana, and if they were disarmed, aiki jutsu/ judo. one of the greatest warriors in the world at the time, used many techniques similar to aikido, and i don't think they would not use it if it did not work.
Thats fine mate it ...
Thats fine mate it was nice to talk to you look after your self. Fighting is not a art it is a form of survival, if you dont understand this then you do not understand martial arts.
The first martial ...
The first martial art I studied was Akido nearly 30 years ago, I did not lose because I was crap, I lost because Akido does not work. Akido works on a certain level IE, puting a person in a wrist lock ect. But try to defend your self against a person high on emotional rage intent on killing you. You will find your self in a situation that you cant handle. I have had many experinces were my life has been on the line, and I dont wish to repeat them. Fighting is stupid, unless you have no choice.
so police/ ...
so police/ correctional officers/ bodyguards/ and paramilitary organizations learn aikido(or hapkido) because it is useless? You make a really good point, but do you think that the reason you lost in the fight was because you were not as proficient as you thought you were? my sensei often states the concept of Beginners mind, which means take advice as if you were a beginner. thinking that you have learned all you can and there is nothing else to learn could impede and even reverse your process.
Utility is what ...
Utility is what dictates a martial arts usefulness, and for example jui jutsu and judo have similar principles, but the applications are for different purposes. Aikido is NOT for hurting your enemy. It is for RESTRAINING and DISARMING. You cannot expand your thinking, so i have no interest in taking this conversation any further with you.
That final sequence ...
That final sequence is insanely fluid! It's like a dance... beautiful.
Woah this looks a ...
Woah this looks a lot more violent and real than the other Aikido videos I've seen
It's best to remain ...
It's best to remain humble I respect all martial arts but aikido is my love!! No one should think they r invincible if they do they are a fool!!!
looks like i noe ...
looks like i noe what to to study for :)
Good for you, if ...
Good for you, if you are able to try some other forms of fighting as well as Akido it will make you a better fighter. I have not trained for 2 years because of an injury, but I hope to start training again in the near future. My son, who I,am very proud of, teaches MMA, but even he realises the limations of martial arts. In a real life situation you only have split seconds to respond, I always told my students, avoid confrontation and only fight if you have no choice. All the best Steve
You totally didn't ...
You totally didn't offend at all! :) I largely agree with you: Some think their martial art makes them kryptonian and saunter cockily into (lethal) problems without a clue what they're in for. I train in aikido mainly because it works for me. From a practical pov I need exactly the spectrum of physical responses it caters for - from last line of defence/evasion against lethal/multiple threats to responsible use of force to detain. If it didn't work for me, I'd do exactly what you did.
True winning fights ...
True winning fights is useless, survival is all that counts in life. I wish not to offend, only to make people realise that martial arts do not make you invincible. As for defending against multiple armed assailants forget it you will end up dead. If some one has a knife run like hell. Search out the truth of knife attacks on you tube, a knife only has to catch you once to end your life. I wish you all the best .
Well some are sheep ...
Well some are sheep and some are lambs, and martial arts don't change real life magically, but whether you're wolf or lamb, better a fit, trained one than not. I too wouldn't fall to martial arts as my first defense, ever, but aikido - if you can do it - offers the choice to disable, control or escape, and a combat-developed approach to multiple/armed assailants Each to their own. I have kids - having/winning "fights" is *USELESS* to me, staying alive and free to defend is EVERYTHING. YMMV.
Hi I,am happy that ...
Hi I,am happy that you managed to defend your self with Akido. I just hope you dont come across a real fighter, then I fear it would be a different story. Most people dont have a clue how to fight, but there are people out there that have never done a days training in their life. But they are some of the most evil sons of bitchs you would ever wish to meet, they could criple you or end your life in seconds. I,am not directing this just at Akido, but any Martial art, I have seen 2nd dans beat up.
I believe the ...
I believe the problem lies in you, i've used aikido to great effect before, it's almost all footwork. We all have strengths/weakness' my friend, it's ok if your not good at aikido. It's not a ring art my friend. It does not work in the ring. It's like a weightlifter and runner seeing who is fitter. The weightlifter is strong, but can't run, drawing a conclusion that running is useless, and strength is the path. The runner is fast and has endurance, but not strong, and sees strength as useless.
Aikido was the ...
Aikido was the first martial art that I studied many years ago. I found out the hard way in the street how usless it is. I do not mean to offend people, but if you have only studied Akido and get into real fight you could be in a lot of trouble. Dont belive me then get into the ring and see how you cope, most people can not handle a real fight. The only way of simulating a real fight in in the ring, but even then there are rules, in the street there are no rules.
Your training in ...
Your training in MMA would have made learning aikido HARDER, as you would have to unlearn most of your MMA concepts. MMA is an excellent martial art, but it's application is very different to aikido. This metaphor should make my point. "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." - Albert Einstein 20 years of MMA experience will make you an excellent ring fighter, but it does not carry over to aikido.
afaik, small joint ...
afaik, small joint manipulation isn't allowed in MMA, hence most of aikido's practicality drops off
Belive me Akido is ...
Belive me Akido is totaly usless in a real fight. I studied Akido for 2 years and found out for real how useless it was. You are probally thinking that I was a bad student, not so. I have since had 20+ years training in mixed martial arts. And I have fought in the ring, and won many times. And I,am ashamed to say that I have fought in the street and won. But at least I,am still alive, I could not say that if I had stayed with Akido. If you dont belive me how many aikido students compete in MMA.
Gonna use a gun.. ...
Gonna use a gun.. long ranged if possible...
sir you obviously ...
sir you obviously know nothing about the techniques of aikido, or any other art then, if pressure is applied in any joint of the body, it will naturally cause the human body to react by putting itself in awkward positions just to release the strain, if you do not roll and breakfall from any throw be it Judo, BJJ,JJ, aikido, systema what ever, you will have broken bones...these practionsers are rolling and breakfalling to protect themselves as it is called a DEMONSTRATION :) Thanks.
