Actually, Kievan Rus was conquered by Novgorod and it became center of Rus due to it strategic position and warm climate. At that moment territory of modern Russia was called Zaleskaya Ukraina (Forest Periphery). But when Kiev was conquered by Polish--Lithuanian Commonwealth it became Ukraina (Periphery).

All the Norse archeological finds in Russia have been from the Mälar valley in Uppland, Sweden, and according to Wulfstan II, Gotland had been a part of Sweden since 880 (before that it was independent) so even if the Rus Varyags came from Gotland they would still be Swedes.
