HP DV9000 blank screen fix! Video problem BGA rework

...

hey pete, a few ...

hey pete, a few years ago my dv9000 started to have graphics issues, but I put it away as I was about to go on a deployment to afghanistan. Fast forward two years later and I decided to dig it out of the closet and the screen shows up in quadruples. For example, if you divide your screen into 4 segments length wise then have the OS show up in each quadrant. Does this mean my integrated video is toast or can you fix it?

We do have a dark IR reworks station and lots of other professional equipment. Our techs are the top in their field and we can do reballs, chip swaps and just about completely rebuild a motherboard from the ground up. All the best, -Pete Mixcat Computers

I agree, we only use Dark IR rework stations at our shop and our repair really has come a long way. We reball, and even can install a brand new GPU for the longest lasting repair. All the best, -Pete Mixcat Computers

Think of it like a ...

Think of it like a cocaine addiction. At first, you do a little cocaine, and you're good. The next time, you do twice as much, then do a little more, to get just as high. Then, you do 4x as much over the span of an evening for the same high. Eventually you do 10x as much and you aren't even high, or enjoying yourself. You're a junkie. Same principle here. Each time you blowtorch a BGA chip, you are melting the solder which allows it to reflow, but it's not the proper way to fix the problem.

The problem with ...

The problem with this method is that it is incredibly ghetto. The chip and board often need to be reballed. New flux applied, new solder. None of this occurs when you just take a blowtorch to the board. Solder flows worse and worse with each heating and cooling as the flux that allows it to flow melts away each time. Each time you do this, you are making it fail that much faster.

The torch heats the ...

The torch heats the solder balls that become cracked or cold under the chip. It allows the ball to become a ball again.

Hi, I have a ...

Hi, I have a question about if I should do that. Mine is a dv7-3165dx (i already put the copper plates, not of much help, but didn't use the torch yet, don't want to screw it up), so, normally it works fine, but it's just enough to start any game, and in about in 5-10 min. it turns off. Is it the same issue? Or this kind of models have a different problem? Thanks guys, you're doing great job.

I have been doing computer repair for over 16 years and not going to stop any time soon. Im going to be moving my location a couple blocks away to a better location for the repairs we do. I will be continuing under my Mixcat Brand; you could say im getting back to my roots being I had this brand since the early 90s. We will be doing a lot more repairs online and you will see lots more interesting and creative solutions for electronic problems. All the best, -Pete

Thanks for this ...

Thanks for this video! The thermal design of this laptop is just horrible. My Turion x2 was over 60-70°C (140-158 ºF) reapplyed the thermal paste, pads... Few mods (bigger wents,...) The wents are 40-50% blocked by the plastic mesh glued on (Memory/Wifi module cover, HDD cover)... And now it's under 40°C (104 ºF) per core and done the GPU chip repair! Thanks again!

And a quick ...

And a quick question about the pen torch. Why did you have to do that? Just so I understand the reason and how its necessary so that when I attempt to I know exactly why and how to do it :) thanks again and because I didn't mention it b4, thanks for posting this video. Theres a lot of us that have been ripping hairs due to HP's horrid design of the DV series and trying to fix the problem. So thank you.

Hey hows it going? ...

Hey hows it going? After watching this, my suspicion that the heatsink needs to be rigged has been confirmed.. though my issue is little different? With my laptop it gets video and loads proper and all that BUT as soon as you do anything eg; install a driver or program or any action, the screen display goes from pretty looking to what you see in safe-mode... and I can't figure out why and I am not totally sure if its hardware or software problem. Some insight would be appreciated, thank you.
