yes they are. but ...

yes they are. but forgive me for this, what point are you trying to make?

MMA was also ...

MMA was also designed for sport competition. They're never taught to target the human body's natural weak points, the eyes, the groin, the throat, etc. because they have rules against it.

Yes MMA does lack ...

Yes MMA does lack discipline when compared to the old Japanese style of training, which includes the spirituality, respect and honor. MMA practitioners discipline however falls in line with the traditional boxing methods of creating fighters, with only a touch of traditional methods from Martial-Arts. Which is really the intent, because MMA training requires the brute force method in creating fighters, which unfortunately has a negative effect in the areas of spirituality. Just my opinion.

It depends on the ...

It depends on the purpose of learning aikido. if it's for self defence for high school bullies, i agree with you. but if it's just for general self defence in a 'just in case' type of situation, i'd say he should stick to what he/she'd like to learn. MMA is good, but it lacks the discipline side of most TMA's. i'm not saying MMA people are undisciplined though. But it lacks the whole spiritual side.

Why young students ...

Why young students should learn MMA in the early years is because the most important years for students it their high-school time. If it takes 7 years to become proficient in Aikido, then it will serve no purpose in high-school. Most MMA clubs can take just about anybody and make a man out of them in 1-2 years, which is the most important time to protect yourself against bullies. Aikido in my point of view is for older 40 years and up.

Understood. Yes I ...

Understood. Yes I have heard that Aikido provides very deep spiritual and self awareness training, something which MMA completely lacks. Which is also why it would take an average person at least 7 years to become proficient in the art to use it for self-defense. With Thai or MMA training, the path to self-defense is much shorter, which makes the path to spirituality much longer. What path a person should take depends on the situation. Young students should learn MMA in my opinion.

i more so mean that ...

i more so mean that aikido is more of a spiritual art (more so than most others are. but not the most spiritual) at least that's my opinion. Yes, i have learnt self defence from it, and in the beginning that's why i wanted to learn it. but as i learnt, i got to know more about it and realised i don't want it for self defence as such. i want it for other things

No im not ignorant ...

No im not ignorant I have seen a white belt jiu jitsu student tap out a 2nd degree aikido black belt multiple times in 8 minutes. If you dont spar you cant effectively learn a technique. Doing a technique when somebody isn't an uke is completely different. Visit your nearest Brazilian Jiu JItsu school. They will take you down and choke you the F out. Just ask Steven Seagal the so called 8th degree Jiu JItsu blackbelt.

Yes I know. Muay- ...

Yes I know. Muay-Thai practitioners are no different. We don't want war, we want peace. Please don't think that we are just barbarians looking to smash everything in our path. That couldn't be further from the truth. We will however split skulls in the most brutal and vicious possible way if attacked.

let me put it this ...

let me put it this way. in the end aikido isn't primarily about self defence. it's about harmony and bettering yourself, not trying to beat the crap out of any fighter.

yes, this is for ...

yes, this is for real. i do aikido and have had the same dilema from time to time. not all is about throwing, and most of it isn't about strength. I've had a woman who was about 3/4 my weight (and i lift weights quite often too) and she threw me quite hard.

to a degree yes, ...

to a degree yes, for that technique, it's not an actual 'self-defence' technique, but more of a following exercise. Granted if you used the other arm to hold onto them and then did the same movement, the results would be quite painful for the person being thrown.
