I thnk the translator has attempted a literal translation that is as close as possible to the original. In many cases it is pretty close. The beauty of Visotsky poetry has definitely disappeared, but you at least can understand what hes talking about, especially if you are interested in Russian version of the poem. Some lines are not accurate, such as "I hurry my horses, I rush them ahead" Anyway, a person who studies Russian should definitely benefit from ths; these are really the subtitles

This translator should be ashamed of themselves. A Russian, butchering Vysotsky's poetry. Vysotsky is a LEGEND, a BARD, and a true martyr of Russian people. How dare of deface his beautiful lyrics, you talentless buffoon!

You're absolutely right, in order to translate something, the translator must be fluent on both languages, both the one being translated from as well as the one being translated to. I don't think my comment was nasty--I think it was a statement of fact. If you care to see decent translations of Vysotsky's work, may I suggest that you look at some of the ACTUAL translations of his work. Nathan Mer has done a pretty good job. You can look his published works up online.

In order to get a perfect translation that embodies the song's original nature and would satisfy a connoisseur like yourself (note the sarcasm), you'd need someone who is fluent/native in both Russian and English. You must be this person, considering that you're so quick to post nasty comments about someone else's translation.
