PS I do remember the "Archies" by the way. Never a big fan. I was always a Marvel superhero comic fan instead of the Charlie Brown, Archies type comics. And I still love the Warner Brothers original cartoons with Mel Blancs satirical genious. Daffy Duck (my fave character) was a classic cynic. Perhaps my affection for him says something about me. At least back then you could spot the difference between bands and name your poison even in the pop music charts. Today I;m not so sure.

Quite right. The pop industry is the pop industry. I guess what we have seen change is the sophistication of the sell and the lengths record companies will go to to manufacture a "brand". Maybe that aphorism says a lot about how commodified music has become. It's a generalisation but perhaps in the old days many artists set out to stretch the boundaries of their own genre or to be trully original. The scene now seems saturated by "product lines" rather than artistic diversification.
