I think it is important to take the oposite view sometimes. Instead of always saying what something is, it might be mutually beneficial to look at what something is not. Also I thought it was interesting that he defines strategy at its most basic form as "what UNIQUE position will we BE ABLE TO achieve..." solidifying that strategy needs to be unique to your company, blended with your core competencies and also inherently have a goal in it, keeping an eye on the future more then the past.

This video was very useful in helping to understand strategy. I might have made the same mistakes in defining strategy had I not seen this video. I think this video really just explained further in detail the definition of strategy covered in class. The definition of strategy in this video as being a unique position and competitive advantage further supports my hypothesis that Google Music needs to be doing something that really sets them apart from competitors like ITunes. Could not be put any better. It almost seems that that is the major step in between what companies are thriving and what companies are hanging on to survive. In seeing the major differences between Amazon.com and Best Buy, this difference can be easily seen between the two companies. Amazon sees what makes them unique and continues to develop that for profit. Meanwhile, Best Buy continues to lose market share due antiquated methods of sales that cannot compare to e commerce.

Reminds me of what we discussed in class concerning Carrefour rapidly expanding in many different countries only to realize this plan was sand bagging their performance while costing them billions. I think a strategy is best thought of as a 'theory of the firm'. These are the constraints that you are going to work within that define you as a company. Thus LVMH revenue strategy is low volume, high margin whilst Wal-Mart is high volume, low revenue. Your definition is the definition of a plan. I dare say a Harvard Prof knows more about strategy than referring to a commonal garden dictionary. In fairness, he doesn't even get a chance to explain the two other limitations...
