Santiago Calatrava: finding architecture's soul

...

this is why ...

this is why historic properties, like victorian houses/georgian tend to sell a lot more than the price of a modern one in the same area. as they're built properly, not of cheap imported bricks from china. This is how my nan made a lot of money, she brought several big old victorian houses for 4k in the 1960s, instead of a modern 1930s for 10k and now the victorian are worth 2.2m and the 1930s one is 400k

You have a point ...

You have a point but the thing is these buildings don't. In 50 years time his buildings will look awful. It will look like 1970s buildings, disgusting. Where as in 50 years time, all these lovely victorian and georgian etc buildings will still look as good as they do today, provided they're well maintained. Plus I very much doubt these buildings will last more than a century.

well, actually, his ...

well, actually, his design are much more effetive than a neoclassical one. It take a lot less materials to be build, and was meant to last forever. And even if vegans and those shitty hipster variants make "eco friendly" sounds silly, its a important factor of our age. And about "beauty" - well, its a matter of personal taste. I found those curves archictecures quite good. If you want to bash some architect, i suggest you to do not mention the "taste" factor, it makes you look like an underage.

What is he drawing ...

What is he drawing with?

Yeah 'fantastic' ...

Yeah 'fantastic' he makes places look like disneyland.

His designs are ...

His designs are disgusting and modern, and will probably rust and fall apart by the end of this century. Modern architects are very untalented. For example, if I asked them to create me a mansion, it would be some vulgar eco-friendly building which looks like a ferrari. Where as if I asked for a mansion 400 years ago, I would receive a grand neo-classical work of art, with the most finest features.

thank you for that

thank you for that

He's talking about ...

He's talking about the aesthetics of any building. For instance, if you build a glass and aluminum building in the middle of a small town where everything is classic architecture, or maybe Renaissance, the building will stick out and look horrible, ruining the surroundings. Or think about making a concrete and brick tenement in the middle of a forest. It's out of place and definitely the wrong design for that setting.

He mean's less ...

He mean's less pollution or negative effect on the environment.

what does he mean ...

what does he mean by buildings having a less of an impact on their surroundings?

he designed a $24 ...

he designed a $24 million bridge here in Calgary and it looks amazing. It will open soon. It's red and looks like a chinese finger trap
