It's the prototypical "banshee" whistle.

the reason i like ...

The reasons the ...

The reasons the Allegheny is more enthralling than the Big Boy are: 1 the vertical pilot steps; 2 the flying air compressors; 3 Its height; 4 the large diameter boiler; 5 the leading truck has a heavy-duty frame; 6 the giant sand domes & pipework coming down the sides of the boiler; 7 the massive firebox that you can play handball in. Points 1 - 4 adds up to a very imposing looking loco from the front The BB has most of its piping under a shell much like the Euro steamers & a skinnier boiler.

great train, but ...

great train, but the whistle sounds like some guy yelling "Woooo!"

Beautiful loco! ...

Beautiful loco! And the box cars looks great, too !!! Wonderful train.

I can't articulate ...

I can't articulate (ha-ha) why, but the 2-6-6-6 seems more enthralling to watch than the 4-6-6-4 Challenger and 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. Perhaps the side-rod work is more intricate or the locomotive itself has a more complex appearance. Regardless I find the Allegheny more interesting to watch in action than the other articulateds. If anyone can relate and can explain why, please let me know-- otherwise please pardon my babbling :-).

The Challenger was ...

The Challenger was not even in the same class for power or size as the Allegheny---Allegheny was much larger. The Challenger did not match up to the N&W Class "A" either. 125,000 to 96.000 lbs of tractive effort. The Challenger was not one of the more powerful articulate Locos.
