Nobody told that Ukrainian should not be the number 1 official language in the Ukraine. BUT: Russian can also be considered as a native language, especially in the Crimea, in the South East and in Kiev. In many territories of the country, Russian is the majority language, i.e. according to democratic rules, Russian should be declared the 2nd official language. This is not a danger for the independence. There are lots of countries in Europe with 2-3 official languages.

Yes, I know that all this linguistic sciovinism against the Russian language in modern Ukraine comes from the fear that Ukrainian could become again the language of the peasants while Russian the language of educated people as it was under the tzars. Anyway, there are many bilingual states. Everybody should learn and use both languages - this is the solution!

the problem is that Ukrainian is too weak language. A very few pple want to develop it. Writers use russian because it has bigger audience. If there will be no law that forbids russian in cinema theaters there will be no Ukrainian in theaters i think because its easier to use russian translation. Because of our bilingualism. But i think that even if 90 percent of Ukraine will use Russian it wont be a disaster for Ukraine.

True but this fact - that also others killed - does not exempt the Ukrainian people from their sins. I didn't hear yet the word "sorry"' for the massacre of Jews who were killed not only by Germans but also by Ukrainians since Bogdan Chmelnitzky until Hitler. In a country where almost 30% of the population is NOT ethnic Ukrainian (in this case Russian), Ukrainian should not be the only official language. The same is valid for all the other countries of Europe where such a huge minority is living: Spain, Romania, Slovakia etc. Without respecting ethnic rights, there is no security and separation cannot be excluded for the future. I have been living for 2 years in Kiev, I know quite well the history of your country, including that of the USSR. I'm also aware of Stalin's crimes against the Ukrainian people, as well of the lots of porgroms committed by Ukrainian peasants against Jews and Poles in the 17th century but also later. Today, there is a forced Ukrainianization of minorities, including ethnic Hungarians in Zakarpatska oblast', which is as bad as the forced Russianization of the past.

I think, Ukrainians are trying to take revenge on the Russian language in independent Ukraine. The Eastern part and other large sections of the Ukraine are inhabited by ethnic Russians. If this is a democratic country, Russian language should be granted the same status as the Ukrainian language enjoys. Lots of European democracies have 2 or even 3 official languages and this fact does not hurt anybody. My video is for those who support equality of Ukrainians and ethnic Russians

The Zaporozhye kozaks headed by Ukrainian national heroe Bogdan Chmel'nitzky massacred thousands of Jewish civilians, anti-Jewish pogroms were part of everyday life in the Ukrainian province, and Ukrainian nationalists (I would say nazis) were in alliance with Hitler in WW2. Today, Ukrainian extremists are trying to attack the minority rights of ethnic Hungarians in Zakarpatska province and bombed a Hungarian national monument

@lavcorinthos First of all, the video contains an Ukrainian song and the post-Soviet part of the composition is showing the new trend of Ukrainization in the city. At the other hand, if you are a democrat you have to accept that in Kiev many people are ethnic Russians and they have their own rights in the city. Don't forget that Kiev was the "mother of all Russian cities" during the period of ancient Rus, i.e. of the proto-state for three current nations.
