I live in Southern ...
I live in Southern Ontario and the light pollution is horrid. I'm in a suburban area ways away from the city core but it's still quite bad. Looking south the skies are nice and dark, but looking north there is a disturbing skyglow. Even after driving 9 miles out into the country, the skyglow from the north can be easily seen and it washes out the northern sky. It's very frustrating and even depressing that I cannot view the Milky Way unless I go on a dedicated travel trip.
People should let ...
People should let these businesses know that they aren't making any friends (or new customers) by creating these conditions. Lawyers should also be prepared to sue the owners of these lights for any accidents that result from the hazards they create.

These lights look pretty annoying and are definitely not designed well. But the worst offenders are those shabby little businesses that want bright lights, but are too cheap to pay for tall masts. They end up putting those ugly, rectangular, reddish colored lights on short masts or, even worse, on the building itself. Most of the light ends up blinding drivers and pedestrians, keeping nearby residents awake and saying, in effect F-you to the public.

I have theory that government is using light pollution to hide ufo's. Maybe there are other reasons but anyway they really stupid. I miss magnificient sky filled with stars.
because it hurts ...
because it hurts animals and people is cost the united states $10 billion each year. We also have to think about our children who won't be able to see the stars at all because light pollution is only going to get worse. Do some research about it!

Its mainly to do ...
Its mainly to do with Astronomy and being able to see the sky clearly. Light in itself is not harmful, but a lot of light fixtures are wasteful of energy (most of it directed to the sky). There maybe also evidence about how light can affect human health, and nature. The clear night sky is a beautiful thing, and its a real shame people cant see it because of poorly designed lighting. If the lighting was directed to the ground, it wouldnt be a problem.
