20 years ago I was ...
20 years ago I was searching for this song but couldn't remember its name. This was pre-internet so I found myself at a library describing this vignette & luckily an older librarian new exactly what it was & gave me the sheet music. When you're young & travelling abroad people ask you to sing a song from your country & this song has always entertained. It also get's a lot of laughs when a guy sings, "Well I've had my chances with all sorts of men, but none are so fine as my lad on the river."

Log driving went out of practice when more and more ships had to use the waterways. The extreme hazards of the profession was also a big factor. Logs are now moved by trains and trucks far more than rivers.

My grandfather did this for 40 years........my grandmother used to sing this song while baking in the kitchen and didn't see this on TV till I was about 10 in 1985. That's where the song came from....I thought it was just something she made up.
