Even so, the highest scientifically supportable death toll for the entire history of Fukushima is less than the lowest estimated death toll from cancer and heart and lung disease from the fossil fuels used to generate power in the average year. The amount of radiation released is actually less than what the average coal fired plant puts out in its lifetime. There is no completely clean and safe, but even including Fukushima and Three Mile Island, nuclear comes closer than any other power system.

Okay, ya got me. The mo significant damage is the coal plants being used to make up for part of the loss of clean power. The second most significant is the particulate and carbon compound emissions from the CNG power plants. The third most significant is the nuclear fuel that was supposed to be encased in concrete and buried away from people, except the anti-nuke crowd wouldn't let them move it, so it piled up and burned after the accident.

What I really got ...
What I really got shocked at after the crisis are: (1) When radiation & contamination levels rose way over the allowed limits, Japanese government simply increased the levels (numbers) for safety accordingly and told their citizens that things are safe and under control. (2) Officials & media are be reluctant to reveal the fatal truths, in the name of avoiding creations of unnecessary discomforts in the society. (3) People simply accept things, and the government has taken no responsibility yet.
