Beethoven marked the piece 'presto agitato'. He did not mark it 'prestissimo', as well he could have. I feel that as the tempo is increased, this option for the 'agitato' is reduced. Clearly, Beethoven wished for us to feel something, not to have the work move on to the next phrase before that feeling has a chance to be absorbed. I think Kempff understood this, and that we hear Beethoven when we listen to him; others, who play quickly, we only hear their vanity, their boasting of speed.
